Walleyes! And…bees?

Today I am in Port Clinton, Ohio. OHIO is one of my favorite states because it starts with O and it ends with O, too!! Isn’t that catchy? And guess what? Port Clinton is sometimes called “the walleye capital of the world.” They even have an annual “Walleye Drop.” I think they should seriously consider changing this to “The Moose Capital of the World.” Although I’m not so sure about having a “moose drop.” That sounds kinda scary.

The park here has some very pretty flowers. See?

These are my favorite!

Hey–look out! A bee! Run!!

Whew. Got away from the bee. This statue makes a nice hiding spot. Although….hey, she looks freaked out, doesn’t she? And the dogs, too? I wonder if SHE sees a bee coming? Do you? She does! There IS a bee! Agh! Run!!

That’s all from PC, OHIO. I can’t come out and say “good-bye” because I’m hiding under a bush, waiting for the bee to go away. In fact, I think there are a few walleye under here, too. See you next time!

Ellijay is in Gilmer County, home of the Apple Festival!

Every fall, Ellijay has a “scarecrow festival.” I came to look around and you know what? There are a LOT of crows here. I’m glad the crows have their own festivals, but what about Moose? Why not a ScareMoose Festival? Wouldn’t that be fun?

Check out this pretty display! But no MOOSE. I need to talk to someone about this.

My hooves are tired…think I’ll stretch out next to my scarecrow friend and have a rest.

Oooh…look at the pretty beads! I need one of these necklaces!

Look at this perfectly good pumpkin just sitting here on this pretty table by the bead shop. It needs to be decorated. I think I’ll make some improvements….there! Cat will love it!

YES. It is definitely time for an iced coffee! I think I’ll invite one of these crows to have a doughnut with me and see if I can find out how to get a ScareMoose Festival started.

Do YOU have a festival in YOUR town? If so, send me some pictures!

Chicago Buffet

I’m so excited! Today I am in CHICAGO. A pretty city that starts with “C!” Best of all, I’m on my way to a CONCERT, which also starts with “C!”

in an uber car-sort of hi tech taxi system

Look at this! I’ve gone from a taxi to a WATER TAXI. I bet you didn’t even KNOW there were taxis for water, did you? Here we go!

on water taxi to Buffet concert

Ooops. I can explain everything, officer. Really. I never meant for my yo-yo tricks to get out of hand. And you wouldn’t keep me from the concert, right?

with Chicago policeman

Whew. The nice Chicago policeman said he’d let me go this time IF I “stay out of trouble.” Why do people always think I cause trouble? I don’t get it. Anyway, I will finish up the rest of my journey very quietly in this bag. This bag has cookies in it, by the way, and I think I see some pretzels down there. This won’t be so bad at all!

Moose taking a break

Okay. Not my fault. I was trying to sleep off the cookies and look what happened? I am a popular Moose and I get held and squeezed and photographed everywhere I go.

en route to Jimmy Buttet concert

What? Even Zumo the cat wants to see me! Well, I do love cats.

on Zumo the cat

Okay, NOW it’s time for the concert. Do you know who we’re seeing tonight? Jimmy Buffet!

with hats

It’s true that Jimmy Buffet has a last name that looks like “buffet,” sounding like “buff-fay,” which is the long line of nachos and french fries and steak and ice cream and sliders and green beans you might find at your favorite place to eat, and that you and Zebra might go to every Sunday afternoon, and after which you might argue over who’s turn it is to pay the check. But it’s not the same thing, just so you know. Don’t ask anyone why Jimmy is on the buffet menu, they will just laugh in your FACE. Jimmy’s name is pronounced just like it looks, much like moose is. Buff-fett. And Jimmy sings really NICE. There are a lot of happy people out there tonight, listening to his songs! My friend Dominic is one of them!

Moose and Dominic at Buffet concert

Wow, that was awesome. And now we’re capping off our night with a stop at Lake Michigan.

And FIREWORKS! My favorite! I better go get some pictures of this and do some Oooohhing and Aahhhing. See you next time!

Maurice Memories

Today I am in the studio of Maurice Sendak. He is one the greatest illustrators and authors EVER!

Maurice is no longer with us, but he has left us many, many happy memories and many wonderful books. Lots of books. Tons of books! Do you know my favorite? WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. I am also a big fan of the LITTLE BEAR books. And IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN.

This is my friend, Brian Selznick. He is also a friend of Maurice’s. We are very excited to be in Maurice’s studio today, remembering him. Do you know Brian? He wrote and illustrated THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABARET, and also WONDERSTRUCK, and about a zillion other books! Seriously. A zillion. Look it up!

Hello there, nice doggie. You know who this is? Herman Melville. True, there was a writer named Herman Melville. He wrote a big book about a whale. It was a very good book, called MOBY DICK. But still. Couldn’t he have written about a moose? MOBY MOOSE, maybe?

Herman Melville is Maurice Sendak’s dog. We are good friends.

Oooh, scarey creature! But no worries. This is one of the wild things from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, and you know, he’s actually pretty friendly. And funny. We’re thinking about getting Elephant and Duck and Cat and Fox, from Z IS FOR MOOSE, and going out for pizza. And of course, sharing stories and memories of Maurice Sendak.

Why not read a book by him today? You’ll be glad you did. See you next time!

Hoofing Through The Tulips

Shhhhhh. I’m hiding. Zebra and Duck and Yo-Yo and Cat and I are playing hide and seek. Zebra is it, of course. And I’ve found this nice comfy flowerbed of Blackeyed Susan’s to hide in.

Hmm. You know what? I like flowers. A LOT. They smell pretty. They are many colors. And they are many SHAPES. I love shapes! Hey, look at this pretty flower over here!

And this one looks like lace!

Uh-oh, I think I heard something. Quick, time to hide under this tiger-lily.

Hey. That reminds me. Why is there a flower named after a tiger, but not a moose? Shouldn’t there be a moose lily, or a brown-eyed Moose, or a Moose daisy or something? Who do I talk to about that?

Well, I’ll add that to my list of things to do. I bet you had no idea Moose stay so busy, did you? As a matter of fact, I may take time out to just have a nap among the flowers. Zebra won’t mind. He told me to make sure and hide myself REALLY GOOD so it would take a while to find me. Yes… a nap it is.

But first, I’ll take just a minute to smell the roses.
